Two iPhone 5 Flaws that Show How Much we Miss Steve Jobs

Ever since Steve Jobs left his legacy at Apple, people have been asking, what would Steve Jobs do?

Now that the iPhone 5 has been on the market for the past four-or-so months, people are still asking, what would Steve Jobs have done differently to fill in the gaps from missing features in iPhone 4S?

Steve Jobs

Samsung launched a marketing campaign jabbing at Apple’s newest phone, belittling its new design by pointing out its “biggest” achievements – like moving the headphone jack from the top of the phone to the bottom.

Samsung may have had some valid points, since this iPhone release was met with more disappointment than any previous releases. People take their phones seriously, whether it’s a smartphone or a home phone service. The reputation of the iPhone is so important that an Apple exec was even let go after the iPhone 5 release.

So how did this Apple fall so far from the iPhone tree?

Apple Maps

One of the biggest benefits of owning a smartphone is getting real-time directions and up-to-date maps. One of the biggest benefits of owning an iPhone is to get the best directions and the best maps. While no one expects perfection 100% of the time, what iPhone 5 customers got was below everyone’s standards. How below? So subpar that Richard Williamson, former VP of iOS Platform Services, was let go from the company has the overseer of Apple Maps.

Apple Maps replaced the popular Google Maps on the iOS platform, much to the dismay of millions of people who went out and stood in line to buy the iPhone 5. Why?

Blurry pictures – Is this real life? An image on your iPhone screen isn’t in beautiful, HD quality? When first released, Apple Maps images showed up as distorted, even warped.  Blurry pictures are not something that has previously been associated with iPhones, so the fact that the new 5 had taken a step back in quality was a big point of frustration for consumers.

Missing locations – Everyone knows the iconic Statue of Liberty. Everyone also knows that it should be standing proudly on Ellis Island. However, viral images went around of our Lady Liberty as nothing but a mere shadow.

Other reported mistakes were mislabeled locations, out-of-date locations, missing cities and towns, and misspelled cities (even the capital of Ukraine was spelled incorrectly).  Apple is quick and has made adjustments since these missteps were first reported back in the fall, but the fact that these mistakes were even made put a bad taste in consumers’ mouths.

NFC – Near Field Communication

One of the biggest wins for the iPhone 5 is Passbook. With this App, you can store boarding passes, concert tickets, coupons, rewards cards, etc. Something as convenient as this led many to believe that a Near Field Communication feature (or NFC) would be included as well.

NFC basically enables you to either touch or swipe your phone at a checkout, instead of using your debit or credit card.

As opposed to Apple Maps, this is considered a missed opportunity because it isn’t even included in the iPhone. However, word on the street is that the next iPhone adaptation will adopt NFC technology.

How to Download Torrents on iPhone or Any iOS Device Using iTransmission – A Quick Guide

Sharing a file or downloading it is not a new concept to anyone now. Millions of people now share and download their data via various software and apps.

Torrents are the most popular files getting downloaded worldwide today. Whether it be a Mac OS user or Windows, downloading the torrents is the preferred choice for everyone.

Download torrents on iPhone using iTransmission

Now that we are moving ahead in technology, most of the gadget freaks today own an iOS operated device and everyone wants to download the torrents on their high-tech iOS gadget.

Monitoring your PC Torrents on mobile phone is very easy but if you actually want to watch a movie on iPhone or to download torrent file in your iPhone or iPad you may need a software named iTransmission.

Actually, being an iOS device user myself, I was trying to download the torrents on my phone and to be very honest, it was not that easy. Downloading the torrents on computer running on any OS is pretty simple but when it is about downloading the Torrents in iPhone, iPad or any other iOS device, I found that things were not that simple.

I know some of the readers here might be thinking that we can easily download the torrents in the iOS device by using the available software but let me tell you guys, those software end up with a real mess. I can tell you this by my experience.

Well, I am not scaring you. Relax!!

I researched a lot and then finally came across a comparatively simple solution named iTransmission to download torrents in my iPhone so thought of sharing the steps with my readers on Technolism.

Go through the following simple steps and get the torrent files downloaded in your iOS devices.

Step #1: Before starting with the download, you first need to jailbreak the iOS device. I guess you know what jailbreaking the iOS device means, if not, let me tell you that Apple devices are bound under many different restrictions from the company which do not allow any sort of third party applications. So, to get the torrents in your iOS device you first need to get out of those restrictions. You can take help from internet to jailbreak your iOS device.

Step #2: After you are done with jailbreaking, you need to download ‘iTransmission’

You can get it from the Cydia App store which especially has the apps for jailbroken iOS gadgets. It is free of cost and is compatible with every IOS device. You will notice a small icon on your springboard when your iTransmission is downloaded on your device.

iTransmission - Cydia app to download torrents on iPhone

Step #3: Now in the next step, you need to search the torrent file you want to download in your iOS device using the Safari search engine. Suppose you want to download some movie on your iPad or iPhone, open Safari and type the name of the movie, don’t forget to write word Torrent after the movie name. Now, check the search results and download the file according to the file size, leeches and seeds – in the similar way you would do on your Mac or PC.

Step #4: Now copy the link of torrent you want to download. Be careful and copy the address correctly.

Step #5: Now when you have the link copied in your iOS clipboard, open the downloaded app iTransmission. Click the small ‘+’ at the bottom left of the app. A menu will pop up on your system screen having a URL tab. Paste the URL copied in the above step and click on OK.

Step #6: You are now done with the steps and all you need to do is to wait for the torrent to download.

Isn’t it simple? This complete process takes not more than five minutes and following these six simple steps, you are all set to watch your favourite movie or any other torrent file in your iOS device.

Best part is that iTransmission software is very user friendly and is compatible with every device running on iOS. You can also use this software to download the torrent files on your computer system, but you need to download and install Transmission for that.

How To Transfer Data From iPhone to Android Phone

The two most favorite brands in the cell phone market today, the iOS and Android have been providing the users with new things with each passing day. If the former one comes forward with the latest iPhone 5 in the coming months, Android is ready with its ICS or Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you now own an iPhone and have decided to make the move to your next smart phone powered by the new Android OS, then its time that you must know what you have to do to make your Android device compatible as well as serve your purpose. We have already covered ways to transfer contacts from Nokia to iPhone here and here. In this post, I am going to help you transfer all your data from your existing iPhone to an Android Phone.

Copy Contacts from iPhone to Android Phone

How to Copy Data from iPhone to Android Phone?

There are a few ways through which you can transfer all your data to the newly bought Android from your iPhone. But you have to be very selective in choosing the option for transferring your data from iPhone to the Android device.

Like, if you want to sync your audio and video files, you can go via the simplest way to have them transferred from your PC or laptop directly through the USB cable to your Android phone. There are many more ways that can be used for the transferring the data from the iPhone to the Android.

I. Use Gmail to Transfer Data from iPhone to Android

The Android device uses Gmail for various purposes. As the OS itself is made by Google, it surely has much functionality added to it. For using this method, you need to make sure that the default email client has been selected in the device.  This is anyways the first thing you need to do while you are setting up the newly purchased Android phone.

Next, you need to sync your iPhone to your PC with the iTunes. To transfer data from iPhone to Android, below are the steps you need to follow.

  • Connect your iPhone to your PC using the USB cable
  • Open iTunes on your PC and select the Info tab
  • Check the ‘Sync Contact With’ option and from the drop down menu, select the ‘Google Contacts’ option
  • Go to Configure and enter your Google Username and Password
  • Your contacts will get moved to the Google account of yours, from where you can easily migrate your data to your Android phone.

II. CSV File Method to Transfer Contacts from iPhone to Android

Another method, though this one is a bit complicated, includes you to create a sync of your contacts with Windows and then with Google, and for this you need to create a CSV file. Below are the steps in this process:

  • Connect your iPhone or any other iOS Device via USB to your PC
  • Open iTunes, select your phone and click the Info tab
  • Check the ‘Sync Contacts with’ option and select ‘Windows Address book’ from the drop-down menu
  • Open the Windows Address book, where you can find all your contacts
  • Follow the steps, File -> Export -> Other Address Book and Select text file
  • Select a name for the CSV file and select the device
  • Go to your Google account and access the CSV file to upload it there
  • Once the import is done, just sync in your Android device with your Google contacts
  • Your contacts will now be available in your Android Powered Phone

III. Use Synkcontact to Transfer Data

This app is available for use in both the iPhone and Android devices. All you have to do is download the app on both the devices from here and install it. In your iPhone, open the app and upload your contacts. You will be provided with the name and password of the file uploaded.

Now, when you have installed and opened the app on your Android, you can easily download the file and merge it to your contact list by providing the name ad password of the file that you created on your iPhone.

IV. Transfer SMS from your iPhone to Android Phone

To have a back-up of your SMS and other messages, there isn’t any application from the house of Apple, thus you have to depend on some third party software. There are a few software available to do the same, in the market. You can download one from the SMS Export. Simply download the app and install it on your PC. Now, you need to have the same software on your iPhone from the App Store which is available at a price of $4.99. Get the back up of all your messages into a text file over your PC through this software.

Download the Android App ‘SMS Migrator’ from here and install it to your Android phone. Place the text file from the PC to the SD card of the Android and access the same over the app SMS Migrator. The app will do the rest of the work by providing you with the texts that you had over the iPhone.

For the rest of the stuff, you simply have to get them from the PC where they are already present in the iTunes library. Select and download them from the PC with the help of the USB cable. It is as simple as transferring media files to the pen drive or flash drive.

Android is though rumored to be strictly against the word Exchange, but if you know the right kind of procedure, you are on the move to have the back up from your iPhone of all the data present there.

We hope that this tutorial on how to transfer your iPhone data to Android helped you. If you still have any questions about the transfer when switching platforms from iOS to Android or vice versa, or are stuck in any of the steps mentioned above, drop us a note in the comments section below and we would be happy to help.

Top 6 Missing iPhone 4S Features

Apple launched iPhone 4S at the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event held in October this year. The Apple fans were quite disappointed as everyone was expecting the launch of iPhone 5 with loads of new features and a overhauled design. While Apple added a number of new features like SIRI, iMessage and iOS5 in Apple iPhone 4S but it failed to add some features in iPhone 4S. Here, I have listed some missing features in the iPhone4S.

iPhone 4S Missing Features Overview

Still the Old 3.5” Display:

Apple didn’t change anything in display. It has got quite a small screen compared with other smart phones. It has same 3.5 inch 960 x 450 Retina display as already available in iPhone 4 which was released in 2010. But LG has announced that their latest Android phone model has 4.5 inch 1280 x 720p HD. So, Apple needs to develop the display from 3.5 inch into 4 inch or more than that.

No 4G compatibility:

The Apple iPhone 4S does not support the 4G. It does not support fastest HSPA+ network. It only supports the HSPA+ network at 14.4 Mbps on the downlink. But there are some Android smart phones which have introduced fastest HSPA+ network or WiMax or LTE. So, Apple needs to concentrate on 4G also.

No Changes to the iPhone 4 Design:

The iPhone 4S comes with the same design as its predecessor, iPhone 4 which had a glass surface. Due to this, there is more chance to break when dropped and lot of chances to crack and shatter the display. To avoid this, metal surface or any other surface which is not easily breakable would be a better choice. But Apple didn’t take any step on this issue.

NFC-integrated technology (NFC):

NFC application is absent in iPhone4S. This technology enables customers to make mobile payments at retail stores. Meanwhile Google, Visa, MasterCard, RIM, Verizon, AT&T are all going to give NFC based mobile payments. We have heard that Apple is working on NFC, but we would have to wait and watch when it is revealed – maybe we get to see it in the next version, iPhone 5.

Standard Based Technologies:

Apple does not follow the Industry Standards. For example, the International telecommunications Union has announced that all Mobile phones use the Micro USB port for charging and data transfer. But Apple iPhone 4S uses a connector which is made by apple. This means the customers need to buy a connector, they are not supposed to use old cable. It also didn’t add HDMI port which is used to share with HDTV. So if you want HDMI, you have to spend extra money on the Apple TV and stream the content wirelessly.

Battery Life:

Apple iPhone 4S has not helped in any way, to improve the battery life. As claimed by Apple at the “Lets Talk iPhone” event, iPhone 4S was expected to have at least the same battery life as the iPhone4. But, to the users’ nightmare, it was further worsened for which Apple found that the issue is with iOS 5 and released iOS 5.0.1 to fix this issue, but did not help many people. We expect iOS 5.0.2 now to be released soon.

Due to these missing features in Apple iPhone 4S, it clearly allows other smart phones to attract the customers but are you going to be influenced by those? Do comment with your choice below. 😉

Install iOS 5.0.1 Now to Resolve Battery Life Issue on iPhone 4S

Apple has finally released iOS 5.0.1 which promises to fix a couple of issues on its Mobile OS which caused the battery drain issue reported by a large number of iPhone 4S users. This issue affected not just iPhone 4S users though, but anybody using iOS 5. Apple eventually figured out that there were bugs in iOS 5 that were causing the battery drainage.

iOS 5.0.1 update to fix iPhone 4S battery issue

iPhone 4S was launched at the Apple Let’s Talk iPhone event held in October this year and became available to the first set of countries on the 14th October, including UK. As I am currently in the UK, I was lucky enough to get my hands on to the latest iPhone 4S. We also covered the unboxing video of iPhone 4S at Technolism.

While using iPhone 4S, we noticed that iPhone 4S’s battery was performing badly as compared to the iPhone 4. Initially, I thought that there might be some issue with the handset that we received, but soon came to know from Apple Forum discussion that there are a majority of users being affected by this issue.

Apple has now reportedly fixed this issue with iOS 5.0.1, the first update to iOS 5, which bought a bundle of new features to Apple’s mobile OS like Notification centre, iMessages, Location based reminders, iCloud, Newsstand, Twitter integration, and is the first version of iOS to introduce Over-the-air software updates.

In addition to the battery drain fix, this update contains improvements and other bug fixes, including:

  • Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

Products compatible with this software update are iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (3rd generation).

So, upgrade your iOS device to the latest version iOS 5.0.1 by connecting to iTunes or directly via over-the-air iOS update feature in iOS5. Do let us know if you notice any improvements in the battery life with this update.

5 Things You Did Not Know About iPhone Projectors

Apple launched its latest phone, the iPhone 4S last month. Its predecessor, iPhone 4 has been in circulation for quite some time now, and a host of accessories have been released to enhance the iPhone use.

One such accessory is the iPhone projector, and there are a number of things that you didn’t know about this device that can be used in so many circumstances. In order to help you understand as much as possible about the iPhone projector, here are 5 things you didn’t know about them.

Projector for Apple iPhone

They Exist

Yes, most people had no idea that these beautifully simple devices existed, and only a small number of people have purchased these devices. These iPhone projectors have been released in the last few months, and those who know about the device are buying them as fast as they are being produced. What many people had hoped would one day happen has, and you are now able to purchase a device that will play videos and presentations from your iPhone.

They Have Many Uses

One of the best things about these iPhone projectors is the fact that they can be used for a host of purposes. All of the pictures that you have taken with your iPhone camera can now be displayed with the iPhone projector, which can show images as large as 40 inches on any surface that is flat.

The iPhone projector can also be used for business purposes, as you can whip out your iPhone projector to show that nifty PowerPoint or Pages presentation you have made on your iPhone or iPad. You can also watch videos when on the go, as the portable projector has a battery life that will allow you to watch an entire 2 hour movie

They Have Amazing Built in Features

The tiny iPhone projector is built with a speaker with 1 watt of power, enabling you to enjoy movies without the need for headphones. You will have a battery that will last 120 minutes, and the power supply can be plugged in to provide unlimited hours of fun. The device is built to be small and fit in your pocket, but it comes with an SD card slot and an A/V input as well.

They Can Be Used With Other Devices

Rather than just being limited to use for iPhones, the iPhone projector can be used with nearly any device you want. You can connect your gaming system, DVD player, and other brands of smart phones. The SD card allows you to insert media at will, and the main video and audio file formats are supported by the device.

There Are Many Types

Aside from the simple projector that is designed to be plugged directly into the iPhone 4, there are a number of pico projectors that can be used with your iPhone. As mentioned above, these devices are easily portable and are able to be carried around in your pocket. You will find that the wide variety of iPhone projectors makes it easy for you to enjoy any type of portable media when on the go.

iPhone 4S Unboxing & Initial Setup [Video]

Apple announced the iPhone 4S at its “Let’s Talk iPhone” event earlier this month and since then Apple fans have been waiting to get their hands on to the iPhone 4S and its most advanced voice assistant feature called Siri, well, including me 😉

Finally, after waiting for more  than a week, I have got my brand new iPhone 4S and I have to say – I am Sirified 😀

Although, you can get all the iPhone 4S features in your existing iPhone 4 by upgrading to the iOS 5, which was released some time back, except for the faster processor – if you are a gaming freak, 8MP camera and Siri, of course; or you can even get Siri on your iPhone 4 like this guy did.

Also Read: Why Apple Could Not Launch iPhone 5?

After getting my bran new iPhone 4S, I thought of doing an unboxing and initial setup video for our readers. So, have a look and do share it with your friends 🙂

If you are accessing this post via Feed Reader, your may direct your browsers to this YouTube link.

So, have you upgraded to the latest iPhone? When are you planning to do so?

So, Siri Can Run on an iPhone 4 As Well!! [Video]

Since the announcement of iPhone 4S and its most talked about feature, Siri, at the Apple iPhone event this month, I have been wondering, with no big difference in the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 (except for the A5 chip and the 8MP camera), why is it not possible to access Siri on an iPhone 4?

For many others who have been thinking the same, here is a good news for you – someone has got Siri working on their iPhone. As reported by 9to5Mac, developer Steven Troughton-Smith has ported the iPhone 4S voice command system, Siri to his iPhone 4. He has been able to get Siri working on an iPhone 4 by installing the iPhone 4S Siri and Springboard files onto an iPhone 4.

Siri Voice Command System on iPhone 4S

Before you get over-excited and take out your iPhone 4, please note that this can be done on a jailbroken iPhone 4 as this is not sanctioned by Apple as of now. (Obviously, who would get an iPhone 4S then :P)

Check Out: Should you upgrade from your existing iPhone 4?

As you can see in the video below, Siri’s interface loads up with all the features from the iPhone 4S implementation on an iPhone 4. Siri on the iPhone 4 can recognize spoken commands in both the standard Siri view and the keyboard Dictation view. However, as of now, Apple is not authenticating commands to its servers routed from an iPhone 4 hardware. The Siri port to the iPhone 4, at this point, also has the ability to speak back to the user.

Also, Siri on iPhone 4 is quite sluggish, the reason for which has been mentioned by 9to5Mac as:

The issue here is not Siri, but is that a special GPU driver for iPhone 4 is needed; and it is obviously not included in the iPhone 4S binary cache – where the Siri files are located.

So, what do you think? Are you going to make Siri accessible on your iPhone 4? I am not going to do it right now but wait for some more time or get an iPhone 4S before that (maybe, next week ;))

Update: Below is another video showing a better performance of Siri on an iPhone 4.

Anyways, from this video as you can see, there is no technical constraint for Apple not to allow Siri on the iPhone 4, as iPhone 4 is able to support the Siri AI system, very well; A4 chip is quite powerful. Or, is it that Apple thinks it would run more smoothly on the A5 chip? Or, is Apple doing this to give people the reason to buy an iPhone 4S? What do you think? 😉
